A Scam That I Experienced

A recent example of a scam I saw in my personal life was a fake DMV test message claiming that I had an unpaid traffic ticket. The message stated that if I did not pay immediately, my vehicle registration would be suspended and my driving privileges would be take away. It included a link that looked like it belonged to the California DMV and told me to pay right away to avoid penalties.

The purpose of this scam was to trick people into clicking the link and entering their personal or payment information. The scammers were trying to steal money and information like credit card numbers. These kind of scams look realistic causing fear and urgency so that people react quickly without thinking too carefully.

The way the scam worked was by pretending to be a legitimate government agent. The message used official sounding language like “final notice” and referenced a fake administrative code to make it seem more realistic. It also used a link that looked similar to a government website, but the actual URL was not a real government domain. By making the message look official and threatening, the scammers hoped people would click the link and provide payment.

There were several ways to determine that the message was fake. First, government agencies usually do not send payment requests through text messages. Second, the link did not end in “.gov,” which is commonly used by government websites. Third, the message created a strong sense of urgency, which is a common tactic used in scams. A good way to verify something like this would be to go directly to the DMV website or contact the agency over the phone rather than clicking the link in the message.

Overall, scales like this show how digital media can be used to manipulate people. By taking a moment to verify sources, check website addresses, and avoid clicking suspicious links, people can better protect themselves from online scams.
